Although most people need to be taught how to relax effectively, it is not something that is difficult to learn. Debbie outlined the health benefits of relaxation, and emphasized the importance of establishing a routine or habit: people should seek to practice relaxation regularly, when and where they have the time and space, and using whatever method works best for them.
There are very many different types of relaxation technique, including aromatherapy, the Alexander Technique (improved posture), mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and reflexology. Essentially they all aim to refocus your attention onto something that is calming while increasing your awareness of your body in the present moment. For her talk, Debbie focused on two strategies ‒ breathing exercises and what is known as ‘visualization’. As a group we were guided through an imaginary peaceful stroll along a sun-warmed beach to the sound of the surf. Everyone was happy to join in!
Debbie gave a very confident, professional talk, full of useful advice and tips. She had thoughtfully prepared some handout sheets providing details of follow-up resources and next-step activities. She received a warm round of applause at the end!
