Susan McCormack, a hearing therapist, gave us a brief outline of her on-going scientific research into emotional reactions and how they affect tinnitus. Her research is supported by the University of Southampton.
Our main speaker was Dr Eliza Tucker, a chartered psychologist based in Winchester, who has over a decade of experience working with tinnitus patients both in Poland and in the UK. It was a fascinating talk. Using examples taken from her own clinical practice, she spoke about the challenges and the rewards of treating tinnitus patients. She also discussed her research into Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and how it can be applied to tinnitus patients with Cochlear Implants. Informing everything she does is a belief that tinnitus patients should be listened to as the best source of information about their own tinnitus, and that a trusting relationship between doctor and patient needs to be established before any meaningful treatment can take place.
It was a very interesting talk and a great way to end a very satisfying year for our tinnitus support group.
