Paul began by explaining the difference between the conscious and subconscious mind. Hypnosis works by utilizing a focused state of trance to gain conscious control over the subconscious mind. In this way, it is possible to focus your attention away from the noise of tinnitus and towards other more pleasant and relaxing sensations.
In the second half of his presentation, Paul guided the group through a brief hypnosis session. A music tape played in the background as Paul instructed us to relax our bodies and imagine anxieties and stress flowing down and away into the ground. The group was then gradually returned to full awareness.
Hypnosis can be a useful technique for helping some sufferers learn to live at relative peace with the noise of their tinnitus.
